Biographie

KD Thompson is Evjue-Bascom Professor in the Humanities and Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. They are the author of Muslims on the Margins: Creating Queer Religious Community in North America (NYU Press, 2023), Popobawa: Tanzanian Talk, Global Misreadings (Indiana University Press, 2017), and Zimbabwe’s Cinematic Arts: Language, Power, Identity (Indiana University Press, 2012).

    • Gendered Voices of Light: Radio, Sitara, and Everyday Islam on the Swahili Coast

      This linguistic ethnographic research examines language and gender at an Islamic radio station in Tanga, Tanzania. The project focuses on how religious authority, gender, and moral discourse are enacted through broadcast media, analyzing both the station’s programming and its internal institutional dynamics. The project explores how Islamic discourse circulates through contemporary media platforms, shaping community understandings of religious practice, gender relations, and moral life in East African Muslim contexts.
